My Nachos

There is one entry that had yet to be in the blog and that was an entry for my own nachos. I have had the following question a couple of times: -Do you make your own nachos since you have rated everyone else's? My answer was always "hahaha no I just rate other people's nachos and have never made my own". I will add that I have put cheese on chips and microwaved them for a quick nacho fix, but I never made the homemade nacho experience happen on my own.  Lately I have been trying to cook some food from around the world: chicken tortilla soup, lime soup, chicken afritada, arepas, etc., so I really thought that in the spirit of stepping out of my comfort zone with cooking, it would be only fitting to make my own nachos and add them to the blog.  The Nacho Blogger's Nachos - December 2021 The Nacho Blogger's Nachos - December 2021 The Nacho Blogger's Nachos - December 2021 Homemade guacamole on the side There I was...in the kitchen all set to put every experi...

Saint John Marina: Saint John, New Brunswick

On May 12, 2021, I was interviewed by Julia Wright on Information Morning  and I said that the Saint John Marina would be my next destination on my quest to find the best nachos. I waited about 3 weeks to go and after that, it took me a while to post this review. Unlike Lily's, whereas I took a long time to review them because the review was going to be poor, I might have taken a long time to collect my thoughts on the Saint John Marina  because it was going to be a really good review that makes me re-evaluate the current top ten of Saint John.  Saint John Marina Beef Nachos - June 2021 Saint John Marina Beef Nachos - June 2021 Distribution of Toppings We did ask for extra cheese on the nachos because I saw a picture of them before going and made a note to ask for extra cheese. Therefore, keep this in mind when you are reading the review and looking at the pictures. I thought that there were just enough toppings to go with all the chips and we did not have any empty chip...

Toro Taco: Saint John, New Brunswick

Toro Taco is located in Market Square in the uptown core of Saint John, New Brunswick. It is a mall food court restaurant that serves Mexican food with a variety of sauces and toppings to go with them. There are few places that I have not tried in Saint John when it comes to nachos, and this was one of the places I have always overlooked... normally when I go to Market Square I end up at Lemongrass for some Thai Food or to the Ale House. It was nacho week at the nearby Gahan House, but we ended up stopping by Market Square to meet a friend, so we took the risk of trying the unknown-to-us Toro Taco  nachos rather than the familiar Gahan House nachos. Did the risk pay off? Toro Taco Beef Nachos - November 2021 Toro Taco Beef Nachos - November 2021 Distribution of Toppings These are different nachos from what I usually review. These nachos are not baked or broiled, which is probably the case with any food court nachos. There was very little shredded cheese, lots of queso, and a decent...

Thandi Restaurant: Saint John, N.B.

At this point, there are very few restaurants in Saint John, New Brunswick that I have not visited for their nachos. I previously had the nachos at  Thandi Restaurant  in 2013 and did not get a picture at that time, and ended up not having their nachos again until 2021. I mentioned Thandi on my interview with Julia Wright on CBC Information Morning Saint John  as one of the places that you may be surprised has nachos. The reason I said that is Thandi is known (in my opinion) for its Asian food and it is hard to go there without having one of their delicious curries, such as butter chicken or vindaloo. However, we decided that we finally needed to dedicate a visit to Thandi for nacho research. It would also make sense to go since I mentioned them in the CBC interview (May 2021) but they were not yet posted on the blog! What if they should have been in the top ten all along? As a former soccer coach said "you should never finish a game and say 'what if'." I am happy to ...

Delizioso Bistro & Sweets: Saint John, N.B.

NOTE: This restaurant has closed. Delizioso Bistro & Sweets is located on the east side of Saint John, New Brunswick, and is across the street from the Cineplex movie theatres. It has been mentioned many times by local foodies , so I had to check it out. I went in February 2021 and I was very satisfied with a lot of the nacho experience and I had them in the Hometown Top ten for a good chunk of this year. Our visit in September of 2021 was not as good. Was it because I had tried more nachos since then and gained more perspective? Or is it just that the magic from February was not quite there in September? Delizioso Nachos - September 2021 Delizioso Nachos -September 2021 Delizioso Nachos - February 2021 Delizioso Nachos - February 2021   Distribution of Toppings There were toppings on all the chips, so they met the standard with the distribution of toppings. Quality The chips were homemade (wheat tortillas fried in-house) which gives them a bit of a competitive advantage over s...

Berc's Cookhouse: Hampton, N.B.

Berc's Cookhouse is located on Main Street, in Hampton, New Brunswick. They do not have a website, probably because they are a brand new business as of the fall of 2021. We checked out their menu at the door and, lo and behold, there were nachos on the menu. I did not know anything about this business going into the experience and it had never been mentioned anywhere on the Foodie Group on Facebook, so everything about it was new. Was it a good new experience? Let's see! Berc's Cookhouse Beef Nachos - October 2021 Berc's Cookhouse Beef Nachos - October 2021 Berc's Cookhouse Beef Nachos (chips leftover) - October 2021 Distribution of Toppings The picture above says a lot about the distribution of toppings. We might have, between the two of us, had 6 chips with something on them and then we were left with many plain chips with not a lot of toppings to put on the chips. Sometimes, at least we get enough dip to go with the leftover plain chips... but this was one of th...

Belly Up BBQ & Grill: Truro, Nova Scotia

Belly Up BBQ & Grill is located on Robie Street in Truro, Nova Scotia. They are known for their great beer, big patio, great eats, and live music. I feel like we missed out on the live music on the patio, but that just means that we will have to go back and experience it! When we went to Truro, we had a pretty wide variety of food including Thai and Indian; however, there were a couple of times where we decided to do some nacho research. This was one of the times.  Belly Up BBQ & Grill Pulled Pork Nachos (sharing size) - September 2021 Belly Up BBQ & Grill Pulled Pork Nachos (sharing size) - September 2021 Belly Up BBQ & Grill Pulled Pork Nachos (sharing size) - September 2021 Distribution of Toppings There was a really good chip to topping ratio. I also really appreciated that there was just the right amount of pulled pork. I do not like nachos that have too much meat - "everything in moderation".  Quality Although I liked how the two cheeses were blended tog...

Nook and Cranny: Truro, NS

Finally! A new blog post outside of New Brunswick for the first time since 2019! We were so excited to go to another province, which turned out to be the province of Nova Scotia. We had some Indian food, Thai Food, and of course that wonderful Mexican food that is nachos. We went to the Nook and Cranny in Truro, NS on a very warm September afternoon and enjoyed the ambiance of their outside patio. Located right downtown on the main street of Truro (Prince Street), this pub is right in the centre of the action in this fun Nova Scotia town. Nook and Cranny Bacon Nachos (personal size) - September 2021 Nook and Cranny Bacon Nachos (personal size) - September 2021 Distribution of Toppings There is no picture with chips left over so you know what that means! Every chip had a lot of cheese and toppings and was satisfying to the last bite. Great distribution. Quality There was perfect toast factor with plenty of toppings on the chips. I appreciated that there was an option to order the corn t...

Poley Mountain: Sussex, New Brunswick

Poley Mountain is located in Sussex, New Brunswick. It is traditionally known for its skiing, but in the past few years in the summer, there has been a chance for the adventurous mountain biker to ride a chairlift up the mountain and bike back down. In addition, you can purchase a $10 lift ticket to hike down the mountain unlimited times throughout the day with a chance to see a nice waterfall. I decided to hike down, but I did not take the trail with the waterfall. I winged it! Which is sometimes the best thing to do when you are hiking down a hill... After the others did some mountain biking and I had hiked down the hill, we decided to have some nachos - because researching for the blog is very important!  Poley Mountain Nachos - September 2021 Poley Mountain Nachos - September 2021 Distribution of Toppings I do not seem to have a picture with some leftover chips so that must be a good sign. There was something for every chip. Quality I really appreciated that there was a good to...

Pub Down Under: Saint John, New Brunswick

The Pub Down Under is located in Place 400 in the north end of Saint John, New Brunswick. It has live music, good beer, and cheap food. Does cheap necessarily mean good? A new location opened uptown and many people on Saint John Foodie  love the Pub Down under (both locations). I think it is a great place to have steak and eggs, or to have a beer while watching some live music. Their nachos on the other hand... we've had worse, but read on for the details: Pub Down Under: Uptown Pub Down Under Beef Nachos - September 2021 Pub Down Under Beef Nachos - September 2021 Pub Down Under What was Left Over - September 2021 Distribution of Toppings Unfortunately, we ran into one of the classic nacho problems: The top layer came off and we were left with many empty chips (see above). Oh dear! Quality The top layer did not have a good toast factor and there was no spice anywhere on the nachos. I thought maybe they could have done something with the beef (taco seasoning?), but everything was s...
