Route 66 Restaurant: Bar Harbor, Maine

Route 66 Restaurant is located in downtown Bar Harbor, Maine. It makes you feel like you have stumbled upon a mad scientist who has a car that takes you back to the 1950's to help your parents fall in love so that you can exist in 2022! The amount of antique Americana memorabilia on display in this restaurant is breathtaking. You'd think "how can I be in the 1950's and have some nachos if they didn't exist then?" Well if you thought that, you'd be wrong: Nachos were created in 1943 by Ignacio Anaya. So there would have been nachos in the 1950's! Yes, so anyways....

Distribution of Toppings

Sometimes the pictures do my job for me because they capture everything I want to say in my reviews. There was something for every chip and there was never a dull moment when it came to the Route 66 Restaurant nachos in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Quality

There was so much going on with this plate and it was loaded with flavor. Everything popped out such as the sour cream, guacamole, BBQ sauce, mountains of pulled pork, and veggies. I appreciated having the salsa on the side, but I know there are people who may not like the sour cream and the guacamole right in there with the chips if they're more of a salsa fan. You can't really see cheese in the pictures but I assure you there was cheese under there. Look at that personality! The atmosphere was amazing as well.

Value

The nachos were on special that day and they came to $16 USD. Today's conversion would have the nachos priced at $21.93 CAD. I think the price is fair considering the absolute size of this tray, and the  experience of eating in such a well-adorned restaurant.

Quantity

We ordered buffalo chicken tenders in addition to these nachos to share for lunch and this was more than sufficient. I don't think we were hungry until the next day!

Conclusion

Sometimes I take off points for not having the traditional layer of melted cheese on top of the nachos because that is how Ignacio intended for them to be. Nevertheless, there are always many avenues for variations on a theme - even regarding the cheese on top. A plate of nachos can have many other flavorful things on top of them to make up for not having the traditional cheese topping, such is the case with these nachos, and they deserve credit for it. I thought our visit to Route 66 was a great treat, especially after not being able to complete the Precipice Trail at Acadia National Park (next time!). If that is not enough comfort food, I suggest having a float.
